What is narrative?

How a story is told rather than what is told.

e.g. when a movie have a beginning, middle and end.

What are the 5 states a story must go through according to Todorov?

  1. Equilibrium - This is the world as it exists at the beginning.

  2. Disruptions - something that changes the state of the beginning. What disrupts the norms

  3. Recognition: when the main characters realises something has been disrupted. This is the stage of the narrative which typically sets the journey for the rest of the movie, show etc

  4. Repair - This is where the protagonists go to fix the disruption and restore the equilibrium.

  5. New equilibrium - either when the equilibrium is repaired or when there is a new norm,

There are all told in linear narratives. It is often difficult to use in non linear structured film
