Crop Liens

Credit system where farmers borrowed money or supplies and promised a future crop

Reconstruction

Period after the civil war focused on rebuilding the South and integrating formerly enslaved people into society

De Jure

Segregation or discrimination that is enforced by the law

Emancipation

The act of freeing enslaved people from slavery

Sharecropping

Labor system where farmers worked land owned by someone else in exchange for a share of the crops

Black Codes

Laws passed in Southern states to restrict the freedom of African Americans after the civil war

De Facto

Segregation or discrimination that exists in practice, but not by law

Nadir

Lowest or worst point in situation

Boycott

Nonviolent protest in which people refuse to buy or use goods or services to force change

Discrimination

The unfair or unequal treatment of individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, or religon

Activism

Effortful action taken to create social, political, or economic change

Segregation

Seperation of groups based on race in public and private spaces

Double Consciousness

The feeling of having two identies like seeing yourself through societes eyes and your actual self

Independence

The ability to act freely, support yourself and decisions without being controlled by others
