The State of France

  • On the brink of bankrupcy

  • Commoners were upset with the higher prices

  • Wealthy high/middle class

  • King louis XVI wanted to reform the tax system so he called the estate general into session

Slogans: “Liberté, egalité, fraternité” (liberty, equality, fraternity) 

The french citizens (3rd estate) was revolting against the ancien regime (monarch, and 1st & 2nd estate)

Napoleon- seized power in 1799 and ruled france until 1814. he led a group of men to coup d'etat= seizure of power of the government. he set up a national school system, created the bank of france, required all citizens to pay taxes, maintained civil equality, religious freedom
