What is an argument?
An argument is a set of reasons or evidence given to support a conclusion.
What two components make up an argument?
Premises+Conclusion
What is philosophy?
the art of constructing and evaluating arguments
Why are commands (do this don’t do that) not considered arguments?
They tell you what to do, but they don’t give a reason why.
Why are statements of fact not considered arguments?
They describe something, but they don’t try to prove or support anything.
Why are exclamations not considered arguments?
They show feelings or attitudes, but they don’t offer reasons.
Why are opinions (with no support) not considered arguments?
They could become arguments if reasons were added, but standing alone they’re just claims.
Why are rhetorical questions not considered arguments?
They can sound persuasive, but they don’t actually state premises leading to a conclusion.
What is a command?
Someone saying do this or don’t do that.
What is a statement of fact?
Just reporting something that happened or something that is.
What is an exclamation?
An expression of emotion, showing feelings or attitudes.
What two things must you identify in an argument in order to write it in standard form?
