Preventive Orthodontics
Treatment aimed at preventing the onset of malocclusion.
Interceptive Orthodontics
Treatment that intervenes to minimize the severity of a developing malocclusion.
Corrective Orthodontics
Treatment that actively eliminates malocclusion, often using fixed and/or removable appliances.
Active Treatment
Involves observation and adjustment of an appliance producing orthodontic or orthopaedic force.
Passive Treatment
Involves managing an appliance that maintains the status quo without exerting force.
Orthodontic Movement
Refers to the movement of teeth through the application of forces to the periodontal ligament.
Orthopaedic Movement
Movement of bone by application of pressure, usually involving stronger forces than orthodontic movement.
Anchorage
A stable unit against which forces are applied to move teeth or bone.
Palatal Expansion
A procedure to widen the upper jaw by separating the two halves of the maxilla.
Headgear
An extraoral orthodontic appliance used to restrain or direct the growth of the maxilla.
Twin Block Appliance
A functional appliance used to correct Class II and III malocclusions by repositioning the mandible forward.
Hawley Appliance
A removable retainer that holds teeth in position post-treatment, can be modified for active movement.
Clear Sequential Aligners
Custom-made aligners fabricated from 3D models aimed at achieving desired tooth movements.
Space Maintainer
A fixed appliance that preserves space in the dental arch following the loss of a primary tooth.
Bonded Lingual Retainer
A fixed retainer bonded to the lingual side of teeth to maintain their position.
Elasticity in Orthodontics
Refers to the ability of materials to return to their original shape after a force is applied and then removed.
Retention Phase
The period after active treatment during which retainers are worn to maintain teeth in their new positions.
Malocclusion
Any deviation from a normal occlusion, which may involve misalignment of teeth or jaws.
Cephalometric Analysis
A diagnostic tool used in orthodontics to assess the relationship between teeth, jaws, and facial structure using X-ray images.
Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)
Devices used in orthodontics to assist in the movement of teeth and provide stable anchorage during treatment.
Functional Appliances
Devices designed to alter the relationship between the upper and lower jaws, often used in growing children to correct skeletal discrepancies.
Skeletal Anchorage
Anchorage achieved via the bones of the skull or jaws, allowing for more controlled tooth movements.
