social control

 the ways that a social system attempts to regulate people’s thoughts, behaviours, feelings, and appearances 

internal social control

regulation of people's thoughts and behaviour through socialization, shaping their minds and therefore convincing them that deviance is undesirable 

external social control

regulation of people's thoughts and behaviours through imposing punishments or rewards 

formal social control

social control through actual authorized authorities like police, judges, and employers

Informal social control

social control through casual interactions and ordinary people through laughter and smiles 

deviance

any behaviour, belief, or condition that violates a norm and other define it as deviance (if people don't say it is, it isn't technically deviant yet 

crime

deviant behaviour that goes against the law 

stigma

 physical or social attributes or signs that devalues a person’s social identity, it disqualifies them from full social acceptance 

courtesy stigma

stigma that a person close to u experiences so you also experience, because of ur close proximity → like if ur friend gets made fun of and ur associated with them, ur in the ‘weird group’ too
