SNARE Complex
A group of proteins that mediate the fusion of vesicles with target membranes, specifically involving syntaxin, synaptobrevin, and SNAP-25.
Priming
The process by which vesicles prepare for fusion, requiring the assembly of the SNARE complex.
Syntaxin
A t-SNARE protein that is involved in the formation of the SNARE complex and can exist in a closed or open configuration.
Synaptobrevin
A v-SNARE protein that is required for the fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane.
SNAP-25
A t-SNARE protein that partners with syntaxin and synaptobrevin to promote vesicle fusion.
UNC-13
A protein that binds to the N-terminus of syntaxin, promoting SNARE complex assembly and vesicle priming.
Synaptic Vesicle Docking Defects
A condition resulting from mutations in syntaxin and UNC-13, affecting the ability of vesicles to dock with the presynaptic membrane.
Synaptotagmin
A calcium-binding protein that regulates vesicle fusion by interacting with the SNARE complex and the presynaptic membrane.
Calcium Influx
The entry of calcium ions through voltage-gated channels that triggers the fusion of synaptic vesicles.
Exocytosis
The process by which synaptic vesicles fuse with the presynaptic membrane to release neurotransmitters.
Munc13 Ring
A structure that docks synaptic vesicles and promotes the assembly of the SNARE complex.
C2B Domain
A region of synaptotagmin that inserts into the target membrane upon calcium binding, facilitating vesicle fusion.
Voltage-gated Calcium Channels
Channels that open in response to action potentials, allowing calcium to enter the cell and trigger neurotransmitter release.
SNAREpins
A stabilized state of SNARE complexes that are clamped and prepared for fusion.
Presynaptic Plasma Membrane
The membrane of the neuron that faces the synaptic cleft and is involved in the release of neurotransmitters.
