Memory
the persistence of learning over time through the encoding, storage, and retrieval of information
Encoding
to get information into the brain
storage
to retain (keep possession of) information in the brain
retrieval
the process of getting information out of memory storage
recall
retrieving information that is not currently in your conscious awareness but was learned at an earlier time
recognition
identifying items previously learned
relearning
learning something more quickly when you learn it a second or later time
parallel processing
the processing of many aspects of a problem simultaneously
short term memory
activated memory that holds a few items briefly before the information is either stored or forgotten
long term memory
the relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory
memory consolidation
the process in the brain that converts short term memories into long term ones
working memory
a newer understanding of short term memory that focuses on conscious, active processing of incoming auditory and visual-spacial information, and of information retrieved from long term memory
sensory memory
immediate, brief recording of sensory information
iconic memory
a momentary sensory memory of visual stimuli (a photographic or picture-image memory lasting no more than a few tenths of a second)
echoic memory
a momentary sensory memory of auditory stimuli (if attention is elsewhere, sounds and words can still be recalled within 3 or 4 seconds)
haptic memory
memory through touching something
explicit memory
memory of facts and experiences that one can consciously know and declare
implicit memory
retention of conscious recollection (nondeclarative memory)
episotic memory
a memory of a specific event (different between people because each person has their own unique experiences)
semantic memory
memory for general factual knowledge and concepts (involving the capacity to recall words, concepts, numbers, or general facts)
permastore memory
long term or permanent memory that develops after extensive learning, training, or experience
effortful processing
encoding that requires attention and conscious effort
automatic processing
unconscious encoding of incidental information such as space, time, and frequency, and of well-learned information, such as word meanings
procedural memory
type of long term memory involved in the performance of different actions and skills (procedures)
flashbulb memory
a clear memory of an emotionally significant moment or event
prospective memory
ability to remember to do something that is going to happen in the future (remembering to go to a doctor's appointment)
autobiographical memory
memories used to tell about yourself
