extends from medial edge of ovary to uterus

• extensive sheet of mesentary

• attaches uterus, uterine tubes, and ovaries to sides and floor of pelvic cavity

  • continuous with parietal peritoneum

cervix

• inferior portion of uterus

• opening of cervix into uterine cavity is called the internal cervical os

• opening of cervix into vagina is called external cervical os

• part of birth canal

• passage way for menstrual flow

  • opening to vagina

vagina

• muscular tube

• extends from external cervical os to vaginal oriface

• receives penis and semen during intercourse

• part of birth canal

• passageway for menstrual flow

perimetrium

• outer covering of uterus

  • continuous with peritoneumm

myometrium

• thick middle layer of uterus

• consists of smooth muscle

  • contracts during labor and delivery to expel fetus

endometrium

• inner lining of uterus

• shed during menstrual cycle

• if ovum is fertilized, it implants in endometrial layer
