Metal Forming
process of obtaining the req. shape and size on the metal by subjecting it to plastic deformation
Hot Working Processes
metals are formed above crystallization temp; remain decutile and soft; not good surface finish
Cold Working Processes
metals are formed below crystallization temp; increases strength lbut decrease ductility; better surface qual;
FREDP
Types of cold working proceses
Bulk Metal forming
refers to the process used when the metal has low SA to V ratioand is shaped by applying significant force, resulting in large deformations. This includes techniques such as forging, rolling, and extrusion.
Forging
uses punch and die, widely used, compressive and tensile
Open Die Forging and Closed Die Forging
2 types of forgingthat differ in tooling and process. Open die forging uses flat or simple dies while closed die forging involves complex shapes made by enclosed dies.
Extrusion
metal being force into a die to produce rods and tubes
Forward Extrusion
extrusion where the punch and the workpiece move along the same directionB
Backward Extrusion
extrusion where workpiece and punch move at opp. direction
Drawing
uses tensile force; ung metal ung hinihilato reduce its cross-section and length, resulting in wire or rod shapes.
Sheet Metal forming
uses force to modify geometry rather than remove any materialDee
Deep Drawing
sheet metal is forced into a cup hollow shape without changin thickness through the application of tensile and compressive forces.
Metal Stamping
punching;blanking;embossing;bending etc<
Metal Blanking
metal workpiece is removed from primary metal strip when punched; the material removed is the new workpiece
Punching
metal workpiece is removed from primary metal strip when punched; the material removed is the scrap
Metal Rolling
compressive deformation; can be hot/cold; bars, sheets, plates
Metal Spinning
transforms sheet metal into a hollow shape using tens. and comp.
Metal bending
includes rotary bending, swivel bending, roll bending using rotary die
Powder Metal Forming
process performed by heating compacted metal powders just below their melting point
