4. Explain and provide an example of out-group homogeneity and how it influences our schemas about people in our social world.
Out-group homogeneity is when we think that people in a different group (the out-group) are all the same, while we see people in our own group (the in-group) as unique and different from each other.
E.g. Saying “all Canadians are polite” is an example of seeing an out-group as all having the same traits.
This changes the way we see people (our schemas) by making us form stereotypes. We may believe things about a group that aren't really true, just because we don't notice or know the differences between its members. It makes it easier for us to make quick judgments about others based on group membership.
