Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Causative agent of gonorrhea, a Gram-negative diplococcus with fimbriae and Opa proteins.
Disease form?
Grows and multipys in areas of the reproductive tract (columnar epithelial cells), and also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus

Symptoms and Incubation period in Men?
incubation period varies from 2-14days, burning sensation when urinating, white/yellow/green discharge, possible infertility and swelling if untreated
Symptoms in Women
often mild, most women who are infected have no symptoms, Painful urination, increased vaginal discharge, bleeding between cycles, risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) if untreated.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) signs, symptoms?
Not always s or s, abdominal pain, fever, internal abscesses, damage to fallopian tubes (enough to cause infertility)
Treatment for Gonorrhea
Single dose antibiotics such as Cefixime, Ceftriaxone, Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, Levofloxacin, or Tequin.
Gonococcal Conjunctivitis
An infection in newborns caused by gonorrhea passed from a mother during delivery, which may cause blindness, blood infections, and joint infections.
Prevention Methods
Avoidance of sexual intercourse, long-term mutual monogamy, and correct use of latex condoms.
Incidence Rate
Approximately 300,000 new gonorrheal infections occur each year in the U.S., predominantly among individuals aged 15-29.
