neo-confucianism

renaissance of confucianism in song dynasty - sees resurgence of confucian values

heian japan

a time in japan’s history when japan had selective cultural diffusion of chinese confucianism and culture - for the elites, and only what they wanted

theravada buddhism

buddhism split into theravada and mahayana; theravada is native to south/southeast asia and is more similar to the original practices

mahayana buddhism

buddhism split into theravada and mahayana; mahayana is native to east asia (china, korea, japan) and is different from traditional buddhism to better suit the region’s previous religions and beliefs

champa rice

rice strain from vietnam that grows very quickly; was used in china where it created a food surplus, leading to a population boom that was sustainable

grand canal

canal created in china that aided with transporting supplies and resources from place to place; also moved humans. is an example of a construction that shows off china’s power and prowess

seljuk empire

aka seljuk turks; an empire established in the heart of the middle east by the turkish people from the steppes. this was an example of a minority ruling over a majority, i believe (CHECK)

mamluk sultanate

a group of slaves in egypt/israel that overthrew their masters and also defeated the mongols when they approached them

a’ishah al-ba’uniyyah

a medieval islamic female poet. drew on concepts from her sufi religion

nasir al-din al-tusi

a medieval islamic mathematician and astronomer

house of wisdom

a place in baghdad where people traveled to learn more; a place of education that caused cultural diffusion as many people from far away traveled to learn

bhakti movement

movement within hinduism that pushed music, dance, poetry and rituals as the way to connect with the divine

sufism

an offshoot of sunni islam that is more mystical and less tangible. are best known for actively trying to bring others into islam
