Balance -
When elements are arranged to create a visual feeling of equilibrium or stability.
4 Types of Balance:
Symmetrical Balance (Formal) -
When objects on each side of an imaginary center line are identical or one side is the mirror image of the other side of the artwork.
Approximate Symmetry-
When one side of a work of art is very similar to the other side but not exactly the same.
Asymmetrical Balance (informal) -
Is more complex and interesting with one side of the artwork being very different than the other side but still having a feeling of equilibrium.
Radial Balance -
When elements radiate from a central point to create equilibrium.

Repetition -
The same elements are used over and over again in the same arrangement.
Pattern -
When you have units of elements repeated in an artwork.
Rhythm -
When units of elements are arranged in curved linear movements that curve in and out like a wave creating a visual tempo.
Rhythmic movement can be
flowing or staccato (shape & jagged)
Other terms related to Patterns:
Moire' -
a wavelike pattern that develops when certain lines are overlapped. It occurs in some op Art designs.
Motif -
An idea that keeps showing up again and again in a set of art pieces. Example: A paisley
Different Types of Patterns:
Planned Patterns Complex Repeats Random Patterns Alternating Patterns
Movement -
To produce a look of action or the way your eye sweeps over the elements in the artwork.
Implied Action -
A work of art represent an action like a drawing of a dog running
Directional Movement -

Actual Action -
Artwork actually moves like a mobile
Kinetic Art -
Any three-dimensional sculpture that contains moving parts. Motion can be started by a motor, air current or a push.
Mobile -
A type of kinetic sculpture constructed to take advantage of balance and wind current. The elements are arranged to create equilibrium.
