Biological Theory
The theory that criminals are pre-programmed through their DNA (genes).
Biological theory 1
Claims that criminals are pre-programmed through their DNA (genes).
Pre-frontal cortex
Area of the brain responsible for higher level mental functions such as reasoning, planning ahead, problem-solving, and rational decision-making.
Underdeveloped pre-frontal cortex
In criminals, it is often found to be underactive and underdeveloped, leading to impulsive and irrational decisions.
Amygdala
The emotional and motivational center of the brain; activated when something scary happens.
Amygdala in criminals
In criminals, these areas have been found to show increased activity within brain scans.
Amygdala in violent criminals
Increased activity in these areas can result in a decrease in reasoned thinking and an increase in impulsiveness and aggression.
Brain injury and crime
Brain injury could be caused through illness or injury.
