Subnetting
The practice of dividing a network into smaller, manageable sub-networks.
IPv4 Address
A 32-bit numerical address used to identify devices on a network.
/26
A subnet mask that allows for 64 addresses, creating 4 subnets.
Block Size
The total number of addresses within a subnet, determined by the subnet mask.
Subnet ID/Address
The first address in a subnet, used to identify that subnet.
Broadcast Address
The last address in a subnet, used to send data to all devices on that subnet.
Usable/Assignable Addresses
The range of addresses available for assignment to devices within a subnet.
Borrowed Bits
Bits taken from the host portion of an IP address to create subnets.
Subnet No.
The identifier for each subnet in a given network.
Router
A device that forwards data packets between computer networks.
Broadcast Address Importance
This address cannot be assigned to a device and is used for broadcasting messages.
Subnet Communication
The ability of devices within the same subnet to communicate directly.
Subnetting Problem Example
An exercise or scenario demonstrating how to identify incorrect IP addresses in a subnet.
Subnet Mask Notation
A format used to denote the size of a subnet mask, such as /24 or /29.
