First-past-the-post system
An electoral system where the candidate with the most votes wins, regardless of whether they achieve a majority.
Electoral College
A body of electors established by the Constitution, responsible for electing the President and Vice President of the United States.
Bicameral Legislature
A legislature with two houses or chambers, such as the U.S. Congress which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Constitutional Monarchy
A form of government where a monarch acts as Head of State within the parameters of a constitution.
Federal System
A system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units.
Members of Parliament (MPs)
Elected representatives in the federal legislative body of Canada.
Head of Government
The individual who oversees the executive branch of government, such as the Prime Minister in Canada.
Majority Government
A government formed by a political party that has more than half the seats in the legislature.
Popular vote
The total votes cast by the electorate in an election, used to indicate public support for candidates.
Ridings or constituencies
Electoral districts in Canada that are represented by elected officials, typically Members of Parliament.
