Consent rules:
If a person does not consent to care you can still call 911
Child - ask a parent or guardian if available, if not, consent is implied.
Unconscious - consent is implied.
Emergency action steps:
Check: scene for safety, consciousness (if conscious do S.A.M)
Call: 911
Care: life threatening conditions, monitor and reassure, only move victim if necessary
Glove rules:
Don’t touch the outside of the glove with your bare hand.
Wash hands after and dispose of gloves.
Signs of an emergency:
Unusual sights, smells, behaviors and sounds.
When should you stop CPR?
Person shows obvious signs of life.
Scene becomes unsafe.
AED is ready.
Too exhausted to continue.
Trained responder takes over.
EMS arrives to care for the patient.
Signs of un-conscious choking:
Chest does not rise during breaths.
What is the correct form for CPR?
30 Compressions, 2 breaths
Straight arms above victim - Elbows locked.
Hands in center of chest - Interlocked
Middle finger aligned with nipple.
No more than 10 seconds between compressions and breaths
100-120 compressions per min
Cardiac arrest:
Electrical malfunction in the heart that causes irregular heartbeat. Cannot pump blood.
Heart attack:
Blocked artery prevents oxygen rich blood from reaching heart.
Heart attacks can lead to cardiac arrest.
Rescue breath length
1 second - chest should rise
When do you use an AED?
When the victim is unconscious.
Why do you use an AED?
It delivers a shock through the chest to the heart when it detects an abnormal rhythm - changes it to normal.
Where do you place the pads?
Top right of chest and below the pec on the lower left.
Safety precautions?
Must be removed from water.
Not placed on a medical implant
