Ophthalmic Medication

Step 1

Examine animal for presence of discharge

Step 2

Get a cotton ball or gauze sponge

Step 3

Gently wipe any discharge from patient's eye

Step 4

Note the amount of medication to be given

Step 5

Open medication

Step 6

Place cap on clean surface

Step 7

Use your non-dominant hand

Step 8

Use your thumb to pull the lower lid down

Step 9

Use your index finger to pull the upper lid upward

Step 10

Hold medication in dominant hand

Step 11

Rest dominant hand on head of the patient

Step 12

Hold medication an inch above the eye

Step 13

Do not touch dispenser to eye or surrounding hair

Step 14

Count each drop/ apply proper amount of ointment.

Step 15

Release the eyelids

Step 16

Allow the animal to blink to move medication throughout the eye
