What is cell theory?
All living things are composed of cells, a cell is the smallest unit of life, all cells come from pre-existing cells
What are the phases of the cell cycle?
Interphase (G1 phase - primary growth phase, S phase - synthesis of DNA and DNA is duplicated, G2 phase - growth continues slowly).
Mitotic phase (Mitosis - nuclear division, duplicated DNA is distributed between 2 daughter nuclei. Cytokinesis - Cytoplasm divides, 2 new daughter cells formed)
Describe the 2 main steps of DNA replication
DNA uncoils and unzips pulling apart the 2 strands
A new complementary strand of DNA is made against the template strand using base pairing
How is cell division regulated?
Regulated through checkpoints.
G1 checkpoint: Is cell big enough, got enough nutrients and DNA intact
G2 checkpoint: Is DNA replication complete and is cell ready for mitosis?
M checkpoint: Are all chromosomes attached to spindle?
