Rods
Photoreceptors in the retina that are more sensitive in the dark than cones and are not found in the fovea (the central part of the retina). They are essential for peripheral and night vision.
Cornea
The transparent front part of the eye
Lens
Focuses light onto the retina
Optic Nerve
The nerve that carries neural impulses of images from the eye to the brain.
Blind Spot
An area where the optic nerve leaves the eye. The reason it’s typically not noticed in that the brain fills in missing information.
Farsightedness
Difficulty seeing close objects clearly (inability to read a book clearly, but can’t see the chalkboard)
Nearsightedness
Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly (can read a book clearly when held close, but can’t see the chalkboard)
Accommodation
The change in the curvature of the lens that enables the eye to focus on objects at various distances
Color Vision Theory
Explains phenomena like afterimages (e.g. staring at a green book and then seeing red on a white page)
Dichromatism
Involves a deficiency in one of the three basic color receptors
