What an is anabolic reaction
The building up of molecules
-growth
-cell/tissue/organ assembly
-protein synthesis
-synthesis of large polymers like cellulose
What are catabolic reactions
breaking down molecules
-digestion
-respiration
-autolysis
What is metabolism
sum of all chemical reactions that occur in the body in order to sustain life
What do enzyme have to do with metabolism
They are involved in the catalysis of every chemical pathway in the body
They control and order reaction pathways in cells and organisms
What are enzymes
Globular proteins that act as biological catalysts for intra and extra cellular reactions. Effect metabolism
Contain an active site specific to one substrate
What is the lock and key model?
Suggests the enzyme has a specific rigid shape determined by its tertiary structure so it's only complimentary to 1 substrate
Formartion of enzyme substrate complexes lowers activation energy
Bonds in the enzyme product complex are weak so the substrate is released
What is the induced fit model of enzyme action
•shape of active site is not directly complimentary to substrate is flexible
•conformational change enable enzyme substrate complexes to form when substrate adsorbs
•this puts strain on the substrate bonds, lowering activation energy, bonds in enzyme product complex are weak so product desorbs
What is intracellular enzymes and an example
Function within cells
-catalase, found in nearly all living organisms, catalyses the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water
What are extracellular enzymes and an example
Enzymes that function outside of cells
-amylase, digestive enzyme produced my the salivary glands and the pancreas, catalysed the breakdown of starch into maltose
