Formant
A resonant frequency of the vocal tract that shapes the sound of vowels and consonants.
F1, F2, F3
The first three formants in vocal acoustics, representing the lowest frequencies of resonance.
Vocal tract length
The distance from the larynx to the lips, affecting frequency and pitch.
Pitch
The perceived frequency of a sound, related to the length of the vocal tract.
Odd multiple
A mathematical reference used to calculate formants; often applied as 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc. for vocal frequencies.
Resonance
The amplification or prolongation of sound due to the natural frequency of the vocal tract.
Larynx
The voice box; an essential component in producing sound and changing pitch.
Higher frequencies vs. lower frequencies
Higher frequencies tend to have less energy and greater displacement in sound waves, compared to lower frequencies.
Boundary condition
A constraint at the edges of a vocal tract that affects sound production.
Constriction
A narrowing in the vocal tract which can raise or lower formant frequencies.
