what was the administrative Chaos?
nationalists took the reserves and educated elite.
how was Chinas industry?
very damaged by the war with the USSR having huge reserves of iron ore and farmland.
what was the lawlessness like?
1 million bandits in the country. Prostitution and gangs in cities
how was the national infrastructure?
warlords, 50 ethnic and religious groups, transport damaged. all very isolated
what was the state of the economy?
constantly changing hyperinflation (1000% 1949) and hoarding.
how was agriculture?
15% of land was cultivable, livestock abd weapons
what was the nationalist threat?
they were sending spies and saboteurs. Seen as the true govt by key countries and citizens feared their return.
what was the unemployment in 1950?
1/3 of the population
what was the tobacco tax and its effect?
120% and it was destroying industry
how did ordinary people react?
suicide was high, people sold children, and abandoned cars as cost of petrol was so high
what did the nationalists do?
bombed naval activity and coasts, blocked China from the sea cutting off trade
how were relations with the outside world?
very hostile and cut if sources of foreign investment
what was the situation with refugees?
they fled to the cities which couldn’t support them
