Suspension
Heterogeneous mixture of a fluid and large particles that will eventually settle out.
Colloid
Heterogeneous mixture in which the particles are too small to settle and thus remain dispersed.
Solution
Homogeneous mixture where the solute is uniformly distributed within the solvent.
Solute
The material that dissolves in a solution.
Solvent
Substance into which a solute dissolves.
Alloy
Solid solution made of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal.
Dissociation
Breaking apart of the ions in a solid ionic compound by the action of the solvent.
Solubility
The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature.
Concentration
The actual amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solution.
Saturated Solution
Contains the maximum amount of solute that the solution can hold at a temperature.
Unsaturated Solution
Solution that contains less than the maximum amount of solute that it could hold at that temperature.
Supersaturated Solution
Solution that contains more than the maximum amount of solute that it can normally hold at that temperature.
Molarity
Number of moles of solute per liter of solution.
Colligative Properties
Properties that change from its parent solvent due to adding solute.
