Science Chapter 9 Terms

  1. Suspension

Book Term: heterogenous mixture of a fluid and large particles that will eventually settle out. Google Term: heterogenous mixture in which the solid particles are spread throughout the liquid without dissolving in it. Me: heterogenous mixture with a particle that will settle without dissolving completely.

  1. Colloid

Book Term: Heterogenous mixture in which the particles are too small to settle and thus remain dispersed. Google Term: mixture in which one substance consisting of microscopically dispersed insoluble particles is suspended throughout another substance. Me: A heterogenous mixture with very small dispersed particles visible with the tyndall effect.

  1. Solution

Book Term: Homogenous mixtures. Google Term: A liquid mixture in which the solute is uniformly distributed within the solvent. Me: a mixture with an even appearance throughout.

  1. Solute:

Book Term: The material that dissolves in a solution. Google Term: A dissolved substance. Me: Dissolving substance for a solution.

  1. Solvent:

Book Term: Substance into which a solute dissolves. Google Term: Able to dissolve other substances. Me: Substance that dissolves a solute in a solution.

  1. Alloy:

Book Term: Solid solution made of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal. Google Term: Substance formed from the combination of two or more metals. Me: Solution usually with a metal element.

  1. Dissociation:

Book Term: Breaking apart of the ions in a solid ionic compound by the action of the solvent. Google Term: The splitting of a molecule into smaller molecules, atoms, or ions, especially by a reversible process. Me: When a solvent dissolves a solute in a solution.

  1. Solubility:

Book Term: The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature. Google Term: The ability to be dissolved; especially in water. Me: The ability of a solute to be dissolved in a solvent.

  1. Concentration:

Book Term: the actual amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solution. Google Term: the relative amount of a given substance contained within a solution or in a particular volume of space; the amount of solute per unit volume of solution. Me: the amount of solute that is dissolved in a solution.

  1. Saturated Solution:

Book Term: Contains the maximum amount of solute that the solution can hold at a temperature. Google Term: a solution that has dissolved as much solute as it is capable of dissolving. Me: Solution with maximum amount of solute able to be dissolved.

  1. Unsaturated Solution:

Book Term: Solution that contains less than the maximum amount of solute that it could hold at that temperature. Google Term: Solution that contains less than the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolving. Me:  Solution with less solute than can be dissolved.

  1. Supersaturated Solution:

Book Term: solution that contains more than the maximum amount of solute that it can normally hold at that temperature. Google Term: a solution with more than the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolved at a given temperature. Me: Solution with more solute than can be dissolved.

  1. Molarity:

Book Term: Number of moles of solute per liter of solution. Google Term: Number of moles of solute per liter of solution. Me: A unit describing the amount of solute paper liter of solution.

  2. Colligative Properties:

Book Term: Properties that change from its parent solvent. Google Term: changes that result from adding solute to a solvent. Me: Changes that happen after a solute is added to a solvent.
