Integumentary
outer covering and protection from the environment (the body's first line of defense). Ex: skin
Skeletal
provides a framework for the skeletal muscles to use to create movement Ex: bones
Muscular
movement and manipulation. Ex: muscles
Nervous
allows the body to respond to stimuli from outside (light, sound, or changes in temperature) and inside (decreases in oxygen or stretching of tissue) the body. Ex: brain
Endocrine
to help maintain a steady state in the body by producing and secreting hormones (produced by endocrine glands) Ex: pituitary, ovaries, & testes
Cardiovascular
transport system for blood which carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, etc. Ex: heart
Lymphatic
to collect and return interstitial fluid (between cells and tissues leaked from the blood), including plasma proteins, to the blood, and thus help maintain fluid balance. Ex: spleen
Respiratory
exchanges oxygen from the air for the waste product carbon dioxide, which is eliminated from the body. Ex: nose and lungs
Digestive
breaks down food, absorbs nutrients (which are distributed throughout the body through the bloodstream), and excretes solid waste. Ex: mouth and stomach
Urinary
regulates salt, and water content of the blood, blood pH. Ex: kidneys
Reproductive
produces sex cells, allows transfer of sex cells and fertilization to occur, permits development and birth of offspring, nourishes offspring, and produces sex hormones. Ex: mammary glands, vagina, prostate, & penis
