What is diffusion

the spreading out of particles resulting in a net movement from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration

how does oxygen diffuse

cells need oxygen for respiration
cells are surrounded by a high concentration of oxygen
oxygen is transported in the bloodstream from the lungs
the oxygen molecul move into the cell by diffusion from an area of high to low concentration

how does carbon dioxide diffuse

Oxygen is used to generate energy in respiration and this produces the gas carbon dioxide
we have a higher concentration of CO2 inside the cell than outside
the CO2 moves out the cell by diffusion
It diffuses out of the cell into the blood plasma and is excreted by the kidney

what affects the rate of diffusion

the greater the concentration gradient the faster diffusion takes place
the higher the temp the greater rate of diffusion
the bigger the surface area of the cell membrane the greater rate of diffusion
