what does structural isomer mean?
compounds with the same molecular formula but a different structural formula
what does stereoisomerism mean?
the same structural formula but a different arrangement of atoms in space
what does stereoisomerism need?
a C=C bond restricting movement, the C to have different groups attached to it
what is E isomerism?
where the not H groups are on the same side, making and almost E shape
what is Z isomerism?
where the not H groups are on the opposite side, making and almost Z shape
what does cis/trans isomerism need?
a C=C bond, different groups attached to the C, the attached group on each carbon of the C=C must be the same
what is cis isomerism?
where the same attached groups are on the same side like E
what is trans isomerism?
where the same attached groups are on the opposite side like Z
