Era of Good Feelings

The James Monroe administration was considered the era of Good Feelings because political fighting between democrats and Federalists had ended. The Federalists were gone, Monroe places Henry Clay in his administration. Roads, Steam Boats, and the Erie Canal were the three diplomatic achievements of this era.

Anglo-American Convention, 1818

Negotiated by the Albert Gallatin. This convention is also known as the London convention. A treaty was signed between the US and UK, it resolved borders, the restoration of slaves, and fisheries issues. It also allowed for join occupation and settlement of the Oregon Country.

Missouri Compromise, 1820

Was an attempt to appease both sides of the debate by admitting Missouri as a slave state in exchange for the admission of Maine as a free state and completely forbidding slavery in the remaining Louisiana territory, except in Missouri.

Jackson in Florida

In early 1818 Jackson was sent to Florida to put down the Seminoles, who had absorbed a great amount of former creek Indians. Jackson lured many chiefs to a conference and hung them. He blamed Spain for a lack of control and kicked the Spanish governor out of Florida.

Adams-Onis Treaty

Also known as the Transcontinental Treaty, John Quincy Adams used Jackson’s advances into Florida by squeezing Spain to sell Florida for $5 million. Spain also recognized the southern border of the US to be the 42nd parallel.
