Where is ozone formed?
stratosphere
what is ozone’s formula
O3
What do CFCs and Halocarbons (halons) do to stratospheric ozone
break it down
UVA
Longest wavelength and lowest energy
UVA and the Stratosphere
All UVA passes through the ozone .
UVB
Wavelength and energy in between UVA and UVB
UVB and Stratosphere
When UVB hits ozone molecules, it doesn’t have enough energy to split anything up and the ozone absorbs MOST of the UVB. Ozone is the only known gas to absorb UVB.
UVC
Highest energy and shortest wavelength
UVC and the Stratosphere
when the UVC light hits O2 molecules in the stratosphere, it breaks them apart into two O molecules. The O molecules then find an O2 to react with and make O3.
Montreal Protocol
International agreement related to ozone depletion. Nations agreed to cut CFC production in half.
Chemical formulas of stratospheric ozone breakdown
CFCL3+UV→ Cl+CFCL3
Cl+O3→ ClO+O2
CLO+O→ Cl+O2
2 human health impacts of ozone depletion
Throat pain and coughing
2 environmental impacts of ozone depletion
More UV gets through to the atmosphere (leads to skin cancer and stuff and damage to ecosystems/aquatic life)
