Epidermis
The outermost layer of skin.
Dermis
The middle layer of skin that contains connective tissue, hair follicles, and other structures.
Subcutaneous layer
The innermost layer of skin that contains fat and connective tissue.
Sebaceous glands
Glands in the skin that secrete an oily substance called sebum.
Sweat glands
Glands that help regulate body temperature by producing sweat.
Hair follicle
A structure in the skin from which hair grows.
Nails
Hard protective plates at the tips of fingers and toes.
Albino
A person or organism with a lack of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes.
Collagen
A protein that provides structure and strength to skin and connective tissues.
Cuticle
The layer of dead skin at the base of a nail.
Lunula
The crescent-shaped white area at the base of a nail.
Melanin
The pigment that gives skin its color.
Sebum
The oily substance produced by sebaceous glands.
Integumentary system
The organ system that includes the skin and its accessory structures.
Pore
A small opening in the skin through which sweat and sebum can be released.
Paronychium
The tissue that overlaps the nail on its sides.
