Olfactory Hedonics
The branch of psychology studying pleasant and unpleasant sensations related to odor perception.
Hedonics
The study of pleasure and pain in relation to sensory experience.
Learned Taste Aversion
Avoidance of a novel flavor after it has been paired with gastric illness, often leading to aversion to the substance's smell.
Vomeronasal Organ (VNO)
A sensory organ that detects pheromones and chemicals not processed by the olfactory epithelium.
Pheromone
A chemical emitted by one member of a species that triggers a physiological or behavioral response in another member of the same species.
Main Olfactory Bulb (MOB)
The primary structure in the olfactory system responsible for processing smells.
Accessory Olfactory Bulb (AOB)
A secondary structure in the olfactory system that receives input from the vomeronasal organ.
Chemosignals
Chemicals emitted by humans that may influence the mood or behavior of others.
Innate Responses
Natural reactions to stimuli that do not require learning or experience.
Olfactory Psychophysics
The study of the relationship between physical characteristics of odorants and how they are perceived.
