trench warfare

A form of warfare in which opposing armies fight each other from trenches dug in the battlefield.

no man's land

A strip of land between the trenches of opposing armies during WW1

treaty

a formal agreement between the governments of two or more countries ( usually treaties are signed at the end of wars)

Treaty of Versailles

Treaty that ended WW I. It blamed Germany for WW I and handed down harsh punishment.

reparations

As part of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was ordered to pay fines to the Allies to repay the costs of the war.

alliance

a relationship in which people, groups, or countries agree to work together (two major alliances of WWI were the Central Powers with Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Empire vs the Allied Powers with France, Great Britain, Russia and later the U.S. and Japan)

stalemate

A deadlock in which neither side is able to defeat the other (problem with trench warfare)

Imperialism

A policy in which a strong nation seeks to take over other countries or territory

nationalism

A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country

Militarism

the belief or desire that a country should maintain a strong military and be prepared to use it to defend the nation
