Corpus Callosum
A band of nerve fibers that connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Thalamus
A relay center for sensory information (except smell) to the cerebral cortex.
Amygdala
Part of the limbic system that processes emotions, especially fear and aggression.
Hippocampus
A structure in the temporal lobe involved in memory formation, learning, and spatial navigation.
Occipital Lobe
The back part of the brain responsible for visual processing.
Temporal Lobe
The side part of the brain responsible for hearing, language comprehension, and memory.
Parietal Lobe
The top middle region of the brain that processes sensory information like touch and spatial awareness.
Frontal Lobe
The front part of the brain involved in decision-making, personality, and voluntary movement.
Classical Conditioning
Learning by associating two stimuli so that one predicts the other.
Operant Conditioning
Learning based on the consequences of behavior (rewards and punishments).
Punishment
A consequence that decreases a behavior.
Reinforcement
A consequence that increases a behavior.
Continuous Reinforcement
Behavior is reinforced every time, leading to fast learning.
Intermittent Reinforcement
Behavior is reinforced only sometimes, leading to longer-lasting behavior.
Hemispatial Neglect
A disorder where a person ignores one side of space due to damage in the parietal lobe.
Wernicke’s Aphasia
A disorder resulting in difficulty understanding spoken or written language due to damage in the temporal lobe.
Anterograde Amnesia
The inability to form new memories as a result of hippocampal damage.
Split-brain syndrome
A condition that results from severing the corpus callosum, impairing coordination between brain hemispheres.
Visual Agnosia
Difficulty recognizing objects due to damage in the occipital lobe.
Gerstmann’s Syndrome
A condition caused by parietal lobe damage, characterized by difficulties in math, writing, and spatial processing.
Phineas Gage
A historical case that illustrated how frontal lobe damage can lead to personality changes and impulsivity.
Thalamic Stroke
A medical condition that can lead to sensory loss, motor impairment, or pain syndromes.
