verify scene safety

step 2

victim is unresponsive, shout for nearby help. activate emergency response system. get aed or send someone to do it

step 3

look for no breathing or only gasping and check pulse (simultaneously). is pulse definitely felt within 10 seconds?

step 3a (breathing + pulse)

monitor until emergency responders arrive

step 3b (no normal breathing, has pulse)

recue breathing (1 every 5-6 seconds/10-12 breaths per minute). activate ems if not done after 2 minutes. check pulse every 2 minutes. go to 4 if no pulse.

step 4 (no normal breathing or pulse)

begin cycles of 2 breaths 30 compressions. use aed as soon as available.

step 5+6

aed arrives, check for shockable rhythm

step 7 (shockable)

give 1 shock. resume cpr for 2 minutes. continue until als providers take over or victim moves.

step 8 (non shockable)

resume cpr for 2 minutes. continue until als providers take over or victim moves.
