TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint)
A synovial joint that allows significant movement, connected by ligaments and surrounded by a capsule.
Synovial fluid
Fluid within the TMJ cavity that lubricates the joint and is formed by the synovial membrane.
Articular disk
A structure within the TMJ that divides the joint into two compartments, allowing for varied movements.
Weeping lubrication
A type of lubrication occurring when the TMJ is compressed without movement.
Boundary lubrication
Lubrication that occurs when the TMJ moves.
Superior joint space
The area of the TMJ that allows for the translation movement of the condyle.
Inferior joint space
The area of the TMJ that permits only rotational movement.
Retrodiscal tissue
Tissue that contains blood vessels and nerves, cushioning the condyle.
Lock jaw
A condition when the condyle translates past the articular eminence, resulting in the condyle becoming detached from the articular disk.
Maseter muscle
A muscle that facilitates the closing of the jaw during chewing.
Lateral pterygoid muscle
A muscle active during the protrusion movement of the jaw and chewing.
Articular eminence
The bony prominence where the condyle meets during maximum mouth opening.
