Noun
A word that names a person, animal, place, thing, or quality.
Common Noun
A noun that refers to everyday items or general items.
Proper Noun
A noun that names a specific person, place, or organization and is always capitalized.
Collective Noun
A noun that denotes a group of similar things, people, or animals.
Abstract Noun
A noun that refers to ideas, qualities, or states rather than concrete objects.
Adjective
A word that describes or modifies a noun.
Comparative Adjective
An adjective that compares two things, usually ending in -er or using the word 'more'.
Superlative Adjective
An adjective that shows the highest degree of quality, usually ending in -est or using the word 'most'.
Verb
A word that describes an action, occurrence, or state of being.
Adverb
A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb, often ending in -ly.
Pronoun
A word that takes the place of a noun to avoid repetition.
Preposition
A word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence.
Conjunction
A word that connects clauses or sentences.
Article
A word that defines a noun as specific or unspecific; includes 'a', 'an', and 'the'.
Interjection
A word that expresses sudden emotion.
Punctuation
Marks used in writing to separate sentences and clarify meaning.
Simile
A figure of speech that compares two different things using 'like' or 'as'.
Metaphor
A figure of speech that makes an implied comparison between two unlike things.
Personification
Attribution of personal qualities to non-human things.
Onomatopoeia
A word that phonetically imitates the sound that it describes.
Alliteration
The repetition of initial consonant sounds in a series of words.
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in closely placed words.
Hyperbole
Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
Euphemism
A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt.
Pun
A form of word play that exploits multiple meanings of a term.
Homonym
A word that is spelled and pronounced the same as another word but has a different meaning.
Antonym
A word that has the opposite meaning of another word.
Synonym
A word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word.
Prefix
A word part added to the beginning of a root word to change its meaning.
Suffix
A word part added to the end of a root word to change its meaning or function.
Direct Speech
The reporting of speech by repeating the exact words used by a speaker.
Indirect Speech
The reporting of what was said by a speaker without using their exact words.
Register
The level of formality or informality used in language depending on context and audience.
