LD50
The dose of a chemical that is lethal to 50% of the population of a particular species.
Dose Response Curve
A graph depicting the effect on an organism or mortality rate in a population based on the dose of a particular toxin or drug.
Threshold
The lowest dose where an effect (death, paralysis, cancer) starts to occur.
ED50
The dose concentration of a toxin or chemical that causes a non-lethal effect in 50% of the population being tested.
Acute Study
A type of dose-response study that measures effects over a short period of time.
Chronic Study
Longer-term dose-response studies that follow developmental impacts over time.
Trophic Cascades
Ecological effects resulting from organisms dying, which are not measured in acute studies.
Parts per million (ppm)
A measurement used to express the concentration of a substance in air.
Dose Concentration
The amount of a chemical present in a given volume or mass (e.g., mg/kg).
