Identify structures
Are they similar in size/shape to contralateral side or expected norm? Where is the structure located?
Identify the relative position of structures
deep to superficial, medial to lateral, superior to inferior and the relationship to the contralateral side
Assess compliance/stiffness of tissues
Does the tissue itself feel the same as the other side or like what you would expect of that tissue?
Assess temperature of tissues
cool temperatures may indicate decreased circulation; warmer temperatures an increase in circulation and/or inflammation
Attempt to locate source of pain
Note, pain can be referred so although this is one purpose of palpation, palpation alone should not determine the source of pain
Assess pulses
indirectly monitors heart function and peripheral blood flow
