Why DO?
Although the allopathic approach to diagnosing a patient is widely common, I would rather be interested in learning to heal the body as a whole and help a person achieve a high level of wellness. I wish to be unique in taking a holistic approach to medicine which osteopathy allows. Additionally, I want to learn Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
Why LECOM?
LECOM is well-known as the nation's largest osteopathic medicine school. Furthermore, I was raised in the tristate area and I am used to the culture that it brings upon, and I believe will be able to adjust to the environment easily. At LECOM, I hope to learn the principles of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, and use their valuable resources such as their OMM Lab to cement my fundamental skills.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment is qualifying for Rutgers Marching Band Competition.
Who is your greatest influence?
My greatest influence is my grandfather. His father died at a very young age and my grandfather was left to take care of his family and educate himself. He took care of his mother and sisters and quickly earned a good reputation for himself. I take him as an influence as I know that with hard work and motivation, you can achieve success even when life throws challenges.
What makes you better than other candidates?
What keeps me unique from other candidates, is my perseverance and my work ethic. Growing up, I was diagnosed with a speech disorder, and at first, I had no belief in myself for being able to communicate effectively again.
What's the one aspect of medicine that you find to be an issue?
One aspect of medicine that I find to be an issue is the work-life balance. Doctors are required to be on stand-by at any time and can sometimes work long shifts. Maintaining your job and your home life will be a challenge.
What is your spirit animal?
I feel like my spirit animal is a whale. I have a strong inner voice and I am not afraid to speak out in what I believe is right. Furthermore, I feel best when I am with my family and friends and I enjoy spending time with them at the fullest.
Who is A.T. Still?
A.T. Still, or Andrew Taylor Still was the founding father of osteopathic medicine. He introduced a method to treat patients through a holistic approach and focus on a method of self-healing.
What are characteristics of a good leader?
A good leader should be able to display integrity, effective communication skills, and know how to mesh the group together. He/she must have patience and ensure that all group members are participating and should hold their peers responsible and accountable.
Where and when was Osteopathic Medicine started?
Osteopathic Medicine was started in 1892 when Dr. Still opened the first osteopathic school in Kirkland, Missouri.
What do you think about professionalism with respect to our dress code, honor code, and attendance policy?
I think professionalism is important as it keeps the important work separate from personal agendas. With professionalism it will allow students to collaborate and work in an effective manner.
What are three important traits of a doctor?
I believe that a doctor needs to be committed, compassionate, and empathetic. They need to be passionate for what they specialize in and need to keep the patient's needs first. Doctors also need to be good listeners as they are a helping hand for patients that are in distress.
Are patients customers?
I don't think patients are customers. Patients arrive in need of help not voluntarily whereas customers do. A patient would only be there if they are suggested to go get some help from a doctor.
Is healthcare a privilege or a right?
I believe that healthcare is a right. As a doctor, you are responsible for treating and saving a patient from something that can potentially harm them. This act shouldn't be based on whether the patient has enough, at a financial standpoint. At the end of the day, the well-being of the patient is what matters and saving as many lives as possible. All people deserve the same treatment no matter their financial situation.
Three words to describe you positively, one negative. Explain
If I were to describe myself positively in three words, it would be motivated, diligent, and dedicated. Focusing on the field of medicine, I am sure that I display these traits, as I have the desire to become a future Doctor of Osteopathy, and will work my hardest to reach that position. I understand that this path will hurdle obstacles at me, but I know that I can easily overcome them and will try my best too.
On the other hand, if I were to describe one negative aspect of myself, it would be the habit I have of always doubting myself. Growing up, I have always doubted my actions, whether it is at school or in the real world. It sometimes makes me pick the wrong choice, and I need to learn to stick with my gut the first time. However, as the years passed, I have changed the way I act and pick choices.
What is LECOM's Mission?
The mission of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is to prepare students to become osteopathic physicians, pharmacy practitioners, and dentists through programs of excellence in education, research, clinical care, and community service to enhance the quality of life through improved health for all humanity.
How do you handle stress?
Rather than stressing, I react to the situation. I find it enjoyable to work in a challenging environment.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I see myself just completing residency and establishing a career and a life for myself.
What would you do if a doctor prescribed the wrong medication to a patient?
If a doctor prescribed the wrong medication to a patient, I'd tell them in a kind way. I don't want to make it seem like I am seeing them as inferior to me, but want to ensure that the patient receives the right treatment.
Do people who don't take care of themselves deserve healthcare?
I strongly believe that people that don't take care of themselves deserve healthcare. As medical professionals, there is a responsibility that needs to be upheld to protect people of the community as much as you can, even if the patient isn't willing. However, as doctors you cannot force them, as ultimately it depends on the patient. However, we can stop at nothing to advise them and give them helpful tips.
What was the last book you read for pleasure?
The last book I read for pleasure was "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah. The novel revolves around the Sierra Leone Civil War and highlights the troubles that Ishmael had to go through as a child soldier. To me, the book was very inspirational as it showed me that even through the most darkest of times, with belief, you can conquer all your demons.
What is the difference between DO and MD?
MD's treat the body through the use of antibiotics and drugs, while DO's rely on the human mind, body and spirit to heal itself. Additionally, DO's specialize in extra training to master the art of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, which moves the patient's muscles and joints to heal the patient.
Strengths and Weaknesses?
Strong problem solver, ability to work under stress and make right decisions under pressure
Listening skills and understanding concepts and visuals in an efficient way, learning on the fly
Weakness:
Talking in front of large crowds such as speeches, public speaking but I can communicate effectively in direct normal conversations. I am constantly working on overcoming my fear of speaking in front of large crowds.
