Ballassaemia
A type of anemia associated with abnormal hemoglobin, which can be studied in modules.
Sickle Cell Anemia
A genetic disorder characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, leading to distorted red blood cells.
Hematologists
Medical professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating blood disorders.
Electrophoresis Gels
Laboratory techniques used to separate proteins or nucleic acids based on size and charge.
Megaloblastic Anemia
Anemia characterized by larger than normal red blood cells due to impaired DNA synthesis.
Pernicious Anemia
A type of megaloblastic anemia caused by a deficiency of vitamin B12 due to the inability to absorb it.
Iron Deficiency Anemia
A common type of anemia caused by a deficiency of iron, resulting in smaller than normal red blood cells.
Macrocystosis
A condition characterized by the presence of abnormally large red blood cells.
Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW)
A measure of the variation in the size of red blood cells; often used in the assessment of anemia.
Reticulocytes
Immature red blood cells indicating the bone marrow's response to anemia.
Hemolysis Screen
A series of tests used to evaluate the breakdown of red blood cells.
Intrinsc Factor Antibodies
Antibodies that can interfere with vitamin B12 absorption, important in diagnosing pernicious anemia.
Macrocytic Anemia
Anemia characterized by larger than normal red blood cells, often linked to B12 or folate deficiency.
Thrombocytosis
An increase in platelet count, which can occur in response to inflammation or infection.
Platelet Function Testing
Tests that evaluate how well platelets function in blood clotting.
Normochromic Normocytic Anemia
Anemia where red blood cells are of normal size and color, often seen in chronic diseases.
LDH
Lactate dehydrogenase, an enzyme that can indicate tissue damage and increased cell turnover.
Holotranscobalamin
The active form of vitamin B12; a test to assess B12 deficiency.
