ANXIETY DISORDERS
Excessive fear and anxiety and related behavioral disturbances
Panic Disorder
Causes - Behavioral causes such as learned associations, cognitive causes, maladaptive thinking, and biological factors
Symptoms - Recurrent panic attacks (abrupt surges of intense fear or intense discomfort accompanied by physical and/or cognitive symptoms).
Treatments - Anxiolytics and benzodiazepines - anti-anxiety medications, counter conditioning, systematic desensitization, extinction, procedures, flooding, implosion, behavioral contracting, modeling, applied behavioral analysis, biofeedback, and hypnosis

Social Anxiety

Symptoms - Fearful, anxious or avoidant of social interactions and situations that involve the possibility of being scrutinized.

Causes - Behavioral causes such as learned associations, cognitive causes, maladaptive thinking, and biological factors
Symptoms - Culture bound anxiety disorder experienced mainly by Japanese people. People are afraid that others are judging their bodies as displeasing.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Causes - Behavioral causes such as learned associations, cognitive causes, maladaptive thinking, and biological factors
Symptoms - Excessive anxiety and worry about a number of events or activities that occurs more days than not for at least six months
Treatments - Anxiolytics and benzodiazepines - anti-anxiety medications, counterconditioning, systematic desensitization, extinction, procedures, flooding, implosion, behavioral contracting, modeling, applied behavioral analysis, biofeedback, and hypnosis
BIPOLAR AND RELATED: Experiencing times of depression and manic episodes. Movement between 2 poles - depressive states and manic states
Causes - combination of biological (neurotransmitters), genetic, sociocultural and cognitive issues
Symptoms - Depressive moods that last at least two weeks and manic moods that last at least one week
Treatments - mood stabilizing medications - lithium carbonate
Mania Symptoms
Very elevated state of being where a person may speak very quickly, go for days without sleep, experience very elevated moods, have delusions of grandeur and a feeling of being invincible
Bipolar I Symptoms
Cycle between full mania and full depression
Bipolar II Symptoms
Manic phases are milder
Depressive Disorders
depressed moods resulting in disruption in functioning of the affected individual
Major Depressive Disorders
Causes - biological (serotonin, norepinephrine), genetic, sociocultural or cognitive factors
Symptoms - Depressed mood most of the day and/or diminished interest in almost all activities. Significantly impairs one’s ability to function. Includes nine categories: depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities (anhedonia), weight gain or loss, insomnia or hyper insomnia, suicidal ideation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, psychomotor changes, decreased concentration.
Treatments - Antidepressants - MAO Inhibitors, SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and Tricyclics, Electroconvulsive (Shock) therapy, Transcranial magnetic stimulation
PDD - Persistent Depressive Disorder
Causes - biological (serotonin, norepinephrine), genetic, sociocultural or cognitive factors
Symptoms - Chronic, long-term depressive symptoms. -duration of episodes and severity of symptoms are different than MDD - at least 2 years
Treatments - Antidepressants - MAO Inhibitors, SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and Tricyclics, Electroconvulsive (Shock) therapy, Transcranial magnetic stimulation
