Authoritarianism
a political system where the power is held by one central leader or government. But people might still have some freedoms in personal areas.
Totalitarianism
a government where one leader or group has total control over politics, economy, culture and what people think and people must obey completely.
Fascism
a far right, authoritarian, ultra nationalist, political ideology
Socialism
a way of organising a country where businesses and resources are owned and controlled by everyone, instead of just a few people, so goods and services are shared more fairly.
Democracy
“power of the people“ a way of governing which depends on the will of the people.
Candidates
Members of political parties who are nominated to run for office in an election
Constitutional monarchy
A political system in which the monarch is the head of state and a parlament makes laws under terms of a constitution
Australian Constitution
A document that describes the rules or laws that govern Australia
Federal Parliamentary System
A political system where the responsibility to make or change laws is shared by one national/federal parlament and six state parlaments
Representative Democracy
A political system based on citizens voting to elect a representitive
Liberal Democracy
A form of government in which the sovereighty is vested in the citizens
Social Cohesion
The willingness of members of a community to live together in a peaceful and cooperative way in order to survive and prosper.
Living Standards
The level of wealth, material goods, comfort and life necessities available to people living in a geographical area
Bilateral Aid
Provided by the Australian government via our taxes
Non Government Aid
Non government organisations such as red cross or world vision run sustainable development programs with communities from the money donated by Australians.
Multilateral Aid
Similar to bilateral but instead of the money going to the country, the government gives it to a global organisation.
Freedom of Speech
The right of individuals to publicaly express their views and opinions on political issues without fear of being punished by the government.
Freedom of Assembly
The right of individuals to peacefully gather together to form a group or association to pursue a common goal
Responsible Government
The requirement that a government must be accountable to the people for its actions and decicions and that members of the governmet must carry out their duties in an honest matter or resign. Non responsible government would be fascist
Separation of Power
The principle of government that ensures no single group in the parliamentary system can administer the law, and interpret or apply the law.
Foreign Aid
The assisntance of government, non governments organisations, buisnesses, and individuals of one country give to the people of another country to help reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development
Judiciary
A legal term used to describe the courts and judges
Republic
a system of government in which the power lies with a group of elected officials rather than a king or queen
Policy
A statement of principles to guide action for the future
