What is Newtons first law?
An object at rest will remain at rest and an object moving at constant velocity will remain moving at constant velocity unless a resultant force acts on it to change its state of motion. (Inertia)
What is Newtons second law?
The rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to the applied force and takes place in the direction of which the force acts. F= ma
What’s Newtons third law?
If object A exerts a force on object B, then object B will exert the same force on object A but in the opposite direction.
What is a force?
Force is the push or pull on an object
What is Weight?
The force an object experiences due to gravity
What is the SI unit for Weight?
Kgms^-2 / N
What is the Formula for Weight?
Weight = mass × acceleration due to gravity
What is Inertia?
The property of objects to resist changes in its state of motion
What is the formula for force?
F=ma
What are the two main types of forces?
> Mechanical
> Non-mechanical
Name the forces that are considered mechanical forces
Thrust
Tension
Drag
Friction
Normal reaction
Elastic force
Archimedian
Name the forces that are considered non-mechanical forces
Gravitational
Electrostatic
Magnetic
Nuclear
Electromagnetic
What are mechanical forces?
forces that exist between objects in contact
What are non-mechanical forces?
forces that exist between objects that aren’t in contact
What is Thrust?
a push exerted on a surface
What is tension?
force in a thread, string or chain
What is normal reaction force?
The thrust resulting from an initial thrust between two surfaces. It is always perpendicular to the surface exerting it
What is Elastic Force?
A force that brings certain objects back to its original shape when deformed
What is Archimedian upthrust?
An upward thrust exerted on a body that is immersed in a fluid. ( liquid or gas)
What is Friction?
The force between and parallel to two solid surfaces which are in contact and are moving relative to each other. This force always acts opposite the the direction of motion
What is drag?
A force between a solid surface and a fluid. It always acts opposite to the direction of motion.
What is Gravitational force?
A force of attraction between masses
What is Electrostatic force?
A force exerted by electric changes
What is Magnetic force?
The force exerted by the poles of a magnet
What is Nuclear forces?
A force that acts between the protons and the neutrons in the nuclei of atoms
What is Electromagnetic force?
A magnetic force produced by an electric current
( moving electric charges)
