Slavery

  • Slavery became extremely profitable for Africa

  • Slaves would sometimes be invited in, abused or sold

  • Europe gives us the system of Slavery→ already in place

  • alot of colonies outlaw slavery before we even get to the civil war

2
New cards

Market Types

  • The Americans

  • The Islamic World

  • always tribes attacking tribes and bringing people to the coast to sell them to white people going one way or the Islamics going another way

3
New cards

Reason

  • African Americans had already been exposes to diseases so they could handle smallpox and many more —> they were completely unfamiliar with the area

  • If you sneezed on a Native American, they had a 80% of dying →if they didn’t want to be a slave they ran into the forest

4
New cards

Triangular Trade

  • Europe

  • Africa (only provided labour/slaves)

  • America

  • Continual cycle of trading for each other

  • Functions close to centuries

  • Europe →traded Rum to Africa

  • Africa→traded Labor to America

  • America traded sugar to Europe

  • sugar canes make the #1 beverage at the time →became so valuable it was more valuable then paper money

  • biggest economic cycle

  • slave traders were viewed as prestigious

  • most of sugar cane was made in carribean

5
New cards

Slaves

  • if you were not fed or clothed owners learned you could get 3 years off someone

  • plaintain owners figured it was cheaper to get a new trade then fed your slaves→ they knew they were working their slaves to death

  • in north american the greatest threat you could put on a slave was that they would threaten to sell them + send them to sugar fields (slaves knew it meant death)

  • slavery was a massive way to increase labor force

  • slaves would say they were baptized and slave owners (members of church) didnt want to put a “brother in christ” as slaves so they would become free→ many slaves used this

6
New cards

Indentured Servitude + extra details

  • like after a certain amount of time you were free→if you pay their passage you made a contract, worked a couple years then apparently you were free

  • didn’t work

  • owners would rewrite it→ extending the contract so then slaves would run away
