Exodus 11

It’s vital to understand this: God is not acting unjustly here. For generations Egypt enslaved the people of God. Pharaoh hardened his heart again and again. This final plague is the just wrath of a holy God being poured out on rebellion. And yet, as Sproul reminds us, even here mercy is present—because judgment itself is not the end. God is preparing to pass over those who are marked by the blood.

Exodus 12:5-6

  • That process centered around a lamb—a lamb that was:

  • Without blemish,

  • A male of the first year,

  • Set apart for death

exodus: 12:13

Then, they were to take its blood and mark the doorposts and lintel of their homes. Why? Because God said

1 Cor 5:7

In other words, the blood of the lamb in Egypt was never just about Egypt. It was always pointing us forward to Jesus. Just as the blood of that lamb caused the angel of death to pass over Israelite homes, so the blood of Christ causes God’s judgment to pass over us.
Let me put it this way: the blood didn’t change Pharaoh’s heart, but it did mark out the people who belonged to God. That’s still true today. The only distinction that matters in the end is this—Are you under the blood?

John 1:29

Just as the lamb in Exodus had to be without blemish, so Christ was sinless—undefiled, pure, and holy. He didn’t die for His own sins. He died for us. He was not only the Lamb—He was the Firstborn, slain under wrath so we might live under grace.

Luke 22

on the night of His betrayal, Jesus sat down with His disciples to eat the Passover meal. But in the middle of that ancient, sacred tradition, He changed the script. He redefined the ritual:  Jesus didn’t abolish the Passover—He fulfilled it. He gave it its fullest and most final meaning. He is the true Lamb. The true covering. The true blood that shields us from wrath. The true food that nourishes us to eternal life. So every time we come to the Lord’s Table, we are not just remembering a symbol—we are declaring the once-for-all sacrifice of our Lamb, who takes away the sin of the world.

The Gospel in the Blood

  • Salvation is by God and from God.

  • Assurance lies in being marked by the blood of the Lamb.

Final exhortation: trust wholly in Christ, the true and final Passover.
