Social groups form and maintain a shared identity based on a belief of common descent or inheritance
What is RACISM?
Belief that human behaviour results from BIOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES
Race becomes a vehicle for privilege / benefit at the expense of someone else
“Since race is a big part of who people are…. it MUST accounts for the way individuals behave”
What are the SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIONS that define race?
INEQUALITIES between racial groups are NOT due to their biology but rather social, economic, educational, and political circumstances
Definition of race can be different / change when we look at different time / space / societies
Race is NOT ascribed (the way we are born does not determine who we become)

How were AFRICAN SLAVES a form of RACIALIZATION?
Practices and processes caused Black individuals to be treated with INEQUALITY and OBJECTIFICATION

Indians taken and sent to different countries to work in British Colonies

COLLECTIVE IDENTITY, common characteristics that create a shared sense of a group / community.

COLLECTIVE identity = JUST a Jamaican thus must take drugs
What is WHITE PRIVILEGE?
“Not having to think about race and its role in day-to-day living”

Examines ways in which there is privilege for certain groups of society, while others are disadvantaged

FORMAL: Census director decided everyones racial classification based on CENSUS DATA
INFORMAL: Deciding based solely on appearance (not just census director but police and judges as well)
What is CLASSIFICATION TAXONOMY?
Organizing things into categories based on shared characteristics
