Internet
An interconnected network of thousands of networks and millions of computers linking businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and individuals.
World Wide Web (Web)
One of the Internet’s most popular services, providing access to billions, possibly trillions, of Web pages.
HTML
A programming language used to create web pages that can contain text, graphics, audio, video, and other objects.
Packet Switching
A method of slicing digital messages into packets, sending the packets along different communication paths, and reassembling packets once they arrive at their destination.
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, the core communications protocol for the internet.
IPv4
A 32-bit number used as an IP address, represented as a series of four separate numbers marked off by periods.
IPv6
A new version of IP that uses 128-bit addresses, able to handle up to 1 quadrillion addresses.
Domain Name System (DNS)
A system that allows numeric IP addresses to be expressed in natural language, making them easier to remember.
Cloud Computing
A model of computing where firms and individuals obtain computing power and software applications over the Internet.
Client/Server Computing
A model of computing where powerful personal computers (clients) are connected to one or more server computers.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
The internet protocol used to transfer web pages.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
An internet service that allows users to transfer files from a server to their client computer and vice versa.
Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
Firms that provide the lowest level of service in the multi-tiered internet architecture by leasing internet access to users.
Intranet
A TCP/IP network located within a single organization for purposes of communications and information processing.
Extranet
A network formed when firms permit outsiders to access their internal TCP/IP networks.
Fiber Optic Cable
A cable consisting of strands of glass that use light to transmit data, capable of transmitting more data at faster speeds with less interference.
Online Forums
Web applications that enable Internet users to communicate with each other asynchronously.
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
A protocol that allows for transmission of voice and other forms of audio communication over the internet.
Search Engine
An identification system that helps users find information on the Web based on keyword queries.
Cookies
Small text files placed on a user's computer by a website to track behavior and store preferences.
SSL/TLS
Security protocols used to establish an encrypted link between a web server and a browser, ensuring data privacy.
Internet of Things (IoT)
A network of physical objects embedded with sensors and software to exchange data with other devices over the internet.
5G
The 5^{th} generation of mobile networking technology, offering significantly faster data speeds and lower latency.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, the standard protocol used for sending e-mail messages across the internet.
IMAP
Standard email protocol that synchronizes messages on a server for multi-device access. Ports: 143 (unencrypted) and 993 (SSL/TLS).
