What is electrolsysis?
The decomposition of an ionic compound into elements using electricity.
What type of elements do we use elctrolysis on?
Reactive elements
List 2 things a D.C supply is used for
to identify products formed during electrolysis
forces electrons to move in one direction
What is the full meaning of D.C ?
Direct Current
What is an electrolyte?
An ion containing solution that allows electricity to flow
What 2 states are elecrolytes always in?
molten or liquid
Full meaning of OILRIG
Oxidation is Reducing Reduction is Gaining
Explain what happens to lead bromide in electrolysis
Lead(metal) will be attracted to the negative electrode(cathode) where it wil become solid aas it goes from a charged ion to a neutral atom. Bromine (non metal) will be attracted to the posisitive electrode(anode) where it will pair up as it is a diatomic element and become gas floating up.
What happens at the anode and why?
Oxidation as metals are negative ions and need to loose electrons to become neutral
What happens at the cathode and why?
Reduction as the metals loose electrons to become ion and need to gain electrons to become neutral
Term for negative electrode
Cathode
Term for positve electrode
Anode
